Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey Birthday Party
(As a warning – a great deal of this post will probably not make sense if you don’t know much about Doctor Who… but you’re welcome to observe our strange ways. This is mostly a blog for all our friends who recently moved overseas and couldn’t join us in person! To those people… helloooooo!!)
So – it all began, as all of our most madcap plans do, in an innocent gmail thread. Our friend D was turning 30 in November and his amazing wife A & our friend F came up with the brilliant plan to throw him the most nerdtastic surprise party ever! A Doctor Who theme was settled upon, as D and the rest of our friends are mad fans.
A time and a place was set. Keys were sneakily exchanged via an accidentally-on-purpose meeting at the shops the day before. The unsuspecting birthday boy was lured out of his apartment with the promise of a birthday brunch…
… which allowed the rest of us to sneak into D & A’s apartment and decorate it with a bunch of blue streamers, some blue balloons, home-made fezzes and bow ties, and a pile of edible treats.
D & A’s awesome Doctor Who book shelf. They honestly have the best house… it is nerd heaven.
Oh and the gas masks…! If you’ve seen Doctor Who, you might know this fantastically creepy episode –
The brilliant Arutea fashioned our masks out of cardboard and cellophone… they were pretty fun…!!
A warning sms was sent, and we all madly scrambled to take our positions… which of course meant that the first thing D saw when he entered his apartment was…
Best friends ever, amirite??
“WHO ARE ALL OF YOU WEIRDOS AND HOW DID YOU GET IN MY APARTMENT”
Of course the facade lasted approximately 1 second before we all burst into laughter at poor D’s confused face. Surprise!!
The birthday boy was promptly fezzed:
And made to eat something quintessentially Doctor Who:
(for the obscure nerd reference, please visit the youtube video here)
Actually I tried it too haha, and it wasn’t too bad!! In a way it sort of reminded me of chips dipped in soft serve (which I love), except with a stronger vanilla taste.
Other (more conventional) treats included:
My pavlova (which I’ve already talked about in this post here: Tardis Blue Blueberry and Passionfruit Pavlova
Zay’s amazing salted caramel filled cupcakes, topped with either a Doctor Who villain or hero, and presented as cupcake chess! (the decision of which characters were to be assigned to each chess position was a much debated topic)
Jammy dodgers (the Doctor’s favourite treat):
Arutea’s salad (after all those sweets, I have never been more thankful to see salad in my life)
And of course the piece de resistance…
TARDIS CAKE! (made by A herself!)
It was such a good day… and made me so glad that I have a bunch of friends who are willing to dress up in creepy masks and scare the bejeezus out of our other friend. And then feed them strange food combinations, followed by a deathly amount of sweets. GROUP HUGGGG YOU GUYSSSS.
I guess the kid inside us never dies 🙂
This. Is. Awesome!!! What a fab party 😀
ha ! that sounds like soo much fun what a lucky guy to have you all as friends
this is one crazy party and the masks were pretty creepy ! i love the nerd heaven haha
Ah yes sure what is a Saturday evening without watching Dr Who on the beeb – I even remember Jon Pertwee as Dr Who – am I showing my age??
Your blog title had me fooled…thought you were going to write about Wibbly Wobbly Wonders..my favourite ice pops as a kid 🙂
But still a good post, missing Dr Who on TV…
This is literally the best thing. My friends and I have started up a Doctor Who fan club of sorts at our school, and we’re contemplating throwing a surprise party like this for one of our younger members. Gas masks-nice touch!
This is seriously THE BEST. I found your stills through Flickr, and they serve as such an incredible inspiration for my own party I hope to host later this year! Love this way too much. 😀
