Bangbang Espresso
I’m starting to think that my favourite meal is the lazy weekend breakfast. Like most people, I am usually wayyyy too disorganised to do anything besides grab 2 slices of vegemite toast on the run – let alone cook anything during the week! So a proper breakfast is always a real treat.
My friend Viv and I decided to check out Bangbang Espresso – as I’d heard so many good things about their British-style brekkies… quite apt as V is about to make the big jump across the pond!
Bangbang is in the quieter side of Surry Hills, away from the hustle and bustle of Crown St. We get there at 10:30am on a gloomy Sunday – and it’s already pretty full! Viv and I manage to grab a little table outside (made of converted milk crates, very cute). Sitting outside is lovely once the sun begins to peek out, but logistically presents a bit of challenge, as the footpath outside of Bangbang is slanted on a pretty mean tilt!
Make sure you don’t fall off your stool!
Concentrating on my sense of balance becomes marginally easier after my coffee –
They use Campos blend here, and the coffee is smooth and deeeelish.
We have a bit of trouble picking what to eat – the menu all sounds great. One side of the menu has a selection of sandwiches and lunchy type menu items, and the other side is breakfast style. In fact there are 3 big breakfasts to choose from:
English Breakfast: bacon, port sausage, 2 fried eggs, baked beans, bubble and squeak with roast tomato and sourdough toast – $19.50
Scottish Breakfast: black pudding, square sliced sausage, tatty scone, 2 fried eggs and roast tomato – $16.90
Veggie Breakfast: pan fried haloumi, 2 poached eggs, avocado, baked beans, bubble and squeak with roast tomato and sourdough toast – $18.50
As well as other cool sounding things I’ve never tried before, like Welsh Rarebit!
After a bit of deliberation, we decide we’re not quite up to the big breakfasts today (but definitely another time – maybe when I have J and his bottomless stomach there as backup!)
Viv goes for the BLAT – bacon, lettuce rocket, avo, tomato sandwich – with an optional fried egg (edit: I just realised that this is actually a BRAT, not a BLAT! Whoops!). Because she is such a nice person, she let me have a bite – and it is super tasty. For a second I have order envy. But only for a second…. because out comes my Bangbang Breakfast Stack!
Bang Bang Breakfast Stack – $16.90
The bottom is a crispy potato rosti, on top of that is wilted spinach, 2 poached eggs, hollandaise sauce, and 2 perfectly crisp wafter-thin slices of pancetta. I like the strong lemony flavour of the hollandaise. Sometimes hollandaise sauce can be quite thick and gluggy, but the Bang Bang hollandaise is quite light – the tanginess helps to cut through the richness of the potato rosti and buttery spinach.
We eat it all up really quickly. And just in time too, because it looks like the lunch crowd is starting to build up. And speaking of…. I’d definitely come back for lunch one day!

this place sounds awesome. I’ve recentlystarted branching out of pyrmont for my sunday brunch with the bff. it’s fun.
I actually discovered that I can get the light rail & we are able five seconds from surry hills so I’m excited to explore.
this place is now on my list
Yay! Soooo many good breakfast places in Surry Hills (you must check out Robocog too, if you haven’t already? So cute). I want to try them allll!
Yum! This all looks great & I love the coffee, I want breakfast in Surry Hills now 🙂
MEE TOOO
Both the sandwich and the stack look awesome.
I knoww! If I were to go back I’d really be torn about what to order again
There is no way I would’ve shared that amazing looking BLAT…but I still would’ve wanted to try your stack…hee hee hee!
Oh whoops! I just realised it was a BRAT! Bacon rocket avo tomato! Such a good name.
Hahah yes she is too kind to me. I did share some of my brekkie stack though, to be good.
Oh man! Cafe breakfast is one of my favorite meals too! The BRAT and your stack look mega delish!!!
Cafe brekkie is the best!! There’s so many places to try though…! Where’s your fave??
The BRAT is the biggest decadent brekky sandwich I’ve ever seen. Not sure which I would choose especially when the egg’s got that streaky crisp bacon too!:(
I love your photos they’re beautiful, and strangely enough I also visited bang bang with a friend and ordered the exact same things :3
We went yesterday – they had already sold out of the breakfast stack, but as everything else was so delicious, we didn’t mind at all. Plus, it gives us an excuse to go back for it. 😀
love your profile name 😉
Glad to hear! I must go back some time soon myself 🙂
