India 2011 – Delhi – Saravana Bhavan
(Part of my ongoing India travelogue… if you want to start from the beginning – check out this post: India 2011)
Of course in between all our sightseeing, we had to eat!
Our first stop was at restaurant Saravana Bhavan opposite the Janpath Markets.
Saravana Bhavan is an immensely popular chain of restaurants which specialises in vegetarian Southern Indian cuisine.
Especially flippin gigantic dosaaaaaaaaa!!!
My mum looking inside the dosa
In case you are curious too. Here is the money shot
The dosa we ordered was masala potato – inside the ginorrrrmous rice flour pancake is a dollop of fried mashed potato mixed with onion and spices. To eat it, you rip off chunks (with your right hand!!) and dip it in the various sauces on offer. These included a little dish of sambar (vegetable stew), a coconut chutney (which was so delicious and sweet), and a coriander yoghurt.
Along with the dosa, we ordered some parottas. Compared to the crispy dosa, these were layered and flaky – and I found them quite similar to roti!
We were almost done with our breakfast when we saw an absolute beauty being served up at the table next to us. So of course we hailed down the waiter and ordered “what they’re having”
Sooo pretty. The appam is made out of rice batter – with a small amount of coconut milk which makes it a tiny bit sweet.
It was a great start to our India trip!
