Vivid Sydney 2011
I have to say, I think Vivid Sydney is one of my favourite events of the year (umm… besides Good Food Month of course. Oh my! I almost blasphemed.)
I can’t think of many other events in the Sydney calendar that encourages photography to the degree that Vivid Sydney does (perhaps Sculpture by the Sea can give them a run for their money, but let’s never talk about that event again ehhh!).
Gotta love photographers. More often than not, it will probably be a freezing, rainy, windswept night – but by golly these punters have tripods, and they’re not afraid to use them!!
Luckily, it was a clear and lovely night when Zay, Jchow and I decided to check out the light walk. After a bit of a dismal showing last year with “Macquarie Visions” (history education dressed up as fun, which ended up being neither fun nor educational) – I was so relieved to see that the Vivid Light Walk of ’09 was back – this time expanded to even more sites around the Rocks and Circular Quay area, and with an even greater emphasis on interactivity.
And as we all learnt in Multimedia Authoring 01 all those years ago…. INTERACTIVITY IS FUN!
These stairs light up in a rainbow as you walk up and down. Magical!
Little kids and big kids having fun
And PLUS – can I just say that I was so impressed with the work that those projection-mapping wunderkinds, Superbien did with the Opera House sails. Those guys sure know what they’re doing…!
Less talk more pictures.
The highlight of the night has got to be “painting the MCA”. Created by Spinifex Group, “Painting the MCA” was a interactive piece that uses participants gestures to throw giant whopping splashes of projected paint onto the Museum’s facade. SO MUCH FUN.
Seeing grown adults line up to flail their arms in front of the MCA = brill. Being one of those grown adults = the best.
And that’s what it’s all about really… can’t wait to see what they come up with next year!
(Vivid Sydney ran from 27 May -13 June 2011. You can check out more of my Vivid Sydney photos on Flickr)
