Free Comic Book Day 2011 – Food Blogger Yumcha aka Epic Saturday
So last last weekend was my chance to nerd out with two completely distinctive groups – how often does that come about! For the first Saturday of May was both Free Comic Book Day, and a yumcha meet-up with food bloggers.
It’s a bit of a tradition for me and my friend Zay to head to Free Comic Book day every year (you can check out my more detailed write up about FCBD in my post about last year’s event)
Unfortunately this year we had to turn up a little early so that I could make it to my lunch meeting, so the cosplayers weren’t yet out in full force (the morning sun, it burnses!). But a highlight for every FCBD is seeing which Batman villain our friend Chewie (comic book artist, storyboard artist, king of Kinokuniya comic book department) will dress up as this year.
Look at them chops, it’s gotta be Ra’s al Ghul!
He’s already done The Joker, Scarecrow, Riddler… running out soon! (there’s still Poison Ivy and Catwoman left, Chewie!)
Anyway, turning up early meant we got our pick of the free comic book titles! I got Mouse Guard, an Avatar The Last Airbender comic, and one called Baltimore.
I love how all the sales assistants get into it. At Kino I saw a Catwoman, a Link, Wonder-woman (pictured above serving Sonic the hedgehog)… at King’s Comics, we saw a Ghost buster and a Solid Snake.
Fun fun.
Afterwards I had to hot foot it over to the Chinese restaurant at the Fish Markets where I watched as a group of mild-mannered food bloggers proceeded to order more yum cha than I have ever seen in my life. It was like watching a locust swarm decimate a helpless field of crops.
That is, if locusts were friendly and polite. And the crops were dumplings.
(Of course everyone had the chance to take a photo first!)
It’s always fun meeting people obsessed with the same things you’re obsessed with. And it’s always fun putting more faces to blogs, and meeting old friends.
Speaking of, how psychic were Spotted Pufferfish and I on our fashion choices that day!!
Also how cool is I Dream in Chocolate’s domokun phone pouch.
Thanks so much to Miss Piggy and Starloz for arranging the awesome lunch!
Nice shoes ! Nice to meet u although didn’t get a chance to talk to u, next time 🙂
Yea! Sad I didn’t get a chance to talk to everyone. But I’m sure I’ll see you around at the next event 🙂
Ha, that shot of me using Laura’s camera actually makes me look like I know how to take photos! Awesome. Thanks so much for coming along – it was great to met you (and I had no idea FCBD existed until now)!
You were working it like a pro! 😀
Thanks so much for organising the day! So in awe of your organisational skills!
Yeah FCBD is a blast. Is Dave much of a comic book/pop culture fan? If so, you guys should definitely check it out next year.
I feel so sad—because I only discovered this just then.
Awww~ you’ll have to come along with us next year! It’s always super fun.
I’ve yet to go to a food blogger gathering that wasn’t a heap of fun. Looks like an incredible amount of food!
That’s so true! Food bloggers are such a friendly bunch
Before I started reading I saw the pic of the guy in the costume and wondered how in hell I didn’t see him in the restaurant 🙂
Hahahaha! Yeah I bet he’d have stuck out a bit during the lunch time rush
Yay nice to see you again Melissa :D. My domo is now famous!
Hooray domo!
