Jónsi and Broken Social Scene

Jónsi at The Enmore Theatre

I’ve really been blessed by the ticket fairy lately! Last weekend’s Splendour in the Grass had a crazy-amazing line-up, which of course meant a crazy-amazing influx of talent into this fair city in the past week.

Being slightly too pansy for a 3-day camping fest, I got tickets to two sideshows: Jónsi, and my old favourites Broken Social Scene.

Jónsi was i-n-c-r-e-d-i-b-l-e. Intense and joyful. Everyone in his band just looked so incredibly happy to be on stage with him.

And how can you not, with songs like these:

One of my recent favourite ads, featuring Jónsi – Go Do

Jonsi
And as if that isn’t the best friggin hat you’ve ever seen

You just have to see the hilarious set list they had on the night (the person who nabbed it was kind enough to let us take photos)

Hilarious set list
So good! I especially like “Drier than a nun’s nasty”. So… descriptive

After seeing the ethereal Jónsi perform, seeing Broken Social Scene was like coming back to old friends.

Broken Social Scene

Like Metric, BSS and the rest of the Arts & Crafts crew have been my longtime favourites throughout highschool and uni. They hit a super soft spot in me – and I just have to see them every time they play.

Broken Social Scene

I’ve seen them play 4 times now! But thanks to their amorphous fluctuating line-up, every time is so different. There could be 6 people on stage, or there could be 16 (more often than not there are at least 11 or 12). This time around they recruited a local horn and brass section to help them out. Pretty cool!

Their songs are erratic and cacophonous, but with a little musical thread hidden in there that you just have to pull before it all becomes clear. Every song sounds so different, but it all just sounds so them.
